Consumer Unit Upgrades

If your fuseboard is tripping repeatedly, still uses old rewirable fuses, or has no RCD protection at all, a consumer unit upgrade brings your home’s electrics up to current safety standards. Wesparx carries out consumer unit and fuseboard upgrades across Sutton, Surrey and South London — every job fixed price, fully certificated, and completed to the latest wiring regulations.

What’s Included in a Consumer Unit Upgrade

A consumer unit upgrade typically involves replacing your existing fuseboard with a modern unit fitted with RCD or RCBO protection on every circuit. As standard, this includes:

A metal enclosure — required under current regulations to contain any fire resulting from an internal fault

RCD or RCBO protection on all socket circuits and lighting circuits
Testing and certification of the full installation, not just the new board
Labelling of every circuit so it’s clear what each breaker controls

Current Wiring Regulations

UK consumer units are governed by BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations), currently at BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, published April 2026. The headline requirements for a compliant consumer unit installation are:

30mA RCD protection on all socket outlets and lighting circuits, with Type A as the minimum RCD type for new circuits

A metal, fire-resistant enclosure for the consumer unit itself
Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) in most new or upgraded installations, unless a risk assessment shows they’re not needed

Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) in higher-risk locations such as bedrooms, where specified
We keep up to date with each amendment as it’s published, so every consumer unit we install is compliant with the regulations in force at the time of the work — and certificated to prove it.

Signs You Might Need a Consumer Unit Upgrade

Your fuseboard still uses old-style rewirable fuses or a wooden/bakelite back

Breakers trip repeatedly, or there’s no RCD protection on sockets at all

You’ve noticed buzzing, warmth, or a burning smell near the fuseboard

A mortgage lender, letting agent, or EICR report has flagged it as a required upgrade

You’re adding a new circuit (EV charger, home office, extension) and the existing board has no spare capacity
