With temperatures in the UK hitting levels that feel distinctly un-British, the search for “air conditioning installation” has gone through the roof this May — and rightly so. But before you buy a unit, it’s worth understanding what the electrical side of the job actually involves. It’s not always as simple as plugging something in.
Split systems need a dedicated circuit
The most popular home AC option is a split system — an indoor unit on the wall, an outdoor compressor unit outside. They’re efficient, quiet, and effective. But they can’t just run off a standard socket. Most split systems require a dedicated 20A or 32A circuit run from your consumer unit, with the right cable size and protection. That’s an electrician’s job before the AC engineer even arrives.
Your consumer unit might need attention first
If your fuseboard is older or already running close to capacity, adding an AC circuit could mean an upgrade is needed first. A modern consumer unit with RCBO protection gives you the capacity and safety margin to add circuits like this without compromise. It’s worth getting this checked before you commit to buying a unit.
What about portable units?
Portable AC units — the ones on wheels with a hose out the window — do run from a standard socket, so no electrical work needed. The trade-off is they’re less efficient, noisier, and frankly not as effective. If you’re cooling one room occasionally, they’ll do. If you want a proper solution for your home, a split system is the better investment.
Do you need an electrician or an AC engineer — or both?
Depending on the job, sometimes both. For a straightforward split system installation in a modern house with capacity on the board, we can handle the full job — supply circuit, unit installation, and commissioning. For larger or multi-room systems, we work alongside specialist AC engineers to make sure the electrical side is done properly and certificated.
